I love my mornings, the slow start kind.
As I continue to design my life and self-care routine, I strive to make it so I can take my mornings in as much as possible.
So far, my morning ritual includes rising with ease and without panic; I can’t stand to be rushed so I give myself extra time to ease into it. As soon as my feet hit the floor, I begin drinking water before anything else goes into my body. I find water just as powerful as coffee as it’s cooling, hydrating jolt wakes me up from the inside. Making my bed is my first sense of accomplishment and I don’t leave my bedroom before I’ve completed it. Then, as I descend throughout my home, I make a quick stop in my light-filled living room for a good 5 mins of slow, deep stretching and breathing on my yoga mat. Mornings are made for easing into happy baby posture and setting my intentions for the rest of the day.
Finally… I make it into my kitchen for breakfast.
Breakfast is by far my most treasured meal and sets the tone of how I feel physically throughout the day. Without the start of a healthy breakfast, I feel it's almost impossible for me to set myself up for success. I guess that sounds like a ton of pressure, but it's really not.
Breakfast rituals do not have to be complicated or overwhelming.
Years ago I would skip breakfast. In fact, I would go hours on just coffee because “I didn’t have time”, “breakfast made me feel sick and bloated”, “I hadn’t gone grocery shopping,” this list of excuses went on and now when I look back, I have no clue how I survived.
Since investing in and committing myself to living a more nutritious and well-balanced lifestyle, gluten free rolled oats have become (by far) my highest ranking go-to in the spectrum of breakfast options I have curated for myself. These oats take me mere minutes to prepare yet the amount of energy, satisfaction, physical wellness, and sheer enjoyment I receive from them is invaluable.
I call them “My Body Worshiping Morning Oats” because I can feel my body thanking me for setting it on a proper physical foundation for the rest of the day.
Oatmeal is not revolutionary content, I do not expect this post to go viral, but it’s something I love and this blog is the place where I share everything I love. If they inspire one person to get on the healthy breakfast bandwagon, I’ll be happy.
Here’s how I prepare My Body Worshiping Morning Oats:
I start with Gluten Free Rolled Oats, prepared per serving and according to package directions (I use Bob’s Red Mill but any brand will do).
Oats are an excellent source of all sorts of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants as well widely beneficial in weight loss and weight management.
I then sprinkle those oats all over with a generous pinch of Ground Cinnamon.
Just google the health benefits of Cinnamon, there is no reason to not eat it as it is by far one of the most healthiest spices on the planet.
Next come one of my favourites, Hemp Hearts! Two tablespoons of these crunchy, earthy beauties get mixed right in my creamy dreamy oats.
Hemp Hearts are a great source of protein, essential fatty acids, plus a ton of minerals. They are also SO TASTY and their crunch becomes highly addictive.
Raw Pumpkin Seeds have become a staple in my home and I add a generous 5-finger-pinch to this concoction.
Pumpkin Seeds = FIBRE TOWN! I can’t speak for anyone else but for this girl, maintaining a healthy body weight means eating a TON of fibre and Pumpkin Seeds are full of fibre.
It hasn’t been a day without Walnuts and these oats get at least a small handful of raw, unsalted Walnuts chopped up on top.
Walnuts have anti-inflammatory properties and are full of healthy omega 3 fats. You always win when you choose Walnuts.
Finally, and possibly my most favourite part, Raisins! Oatmeal calls for sweetness and these little sun-drenched beauties offer the balance of natural sweetness that is most commonly provided by brown sugar.
Raisins are full of natural sugar so don’t go crazy here, but when eaten in moderation raisins offer your body a ton of fibre and iron. Women especially benefit from the iron providing properties of raisins as they help keep our bones super strong. If you’re not a raisin lover, find a dried fruit and supplement accordingly.
So there it is, “My Body Worshiping Morning Oats,” the physical foundation of my day and a little something this Canadian girl has grown to love. Comment below if you have any questions or suggestions on increasing the power of “the oats” or just enjoy and have fun creating your own body-worshiping morning ritual.
